Occupational safety for engineering and planning offices
The duties are the same for every office and administrative business. What differs for engineering and planning offices is where the risk assessment puts its focus.
- Engineering & planning offices
What is different here
Two working worlds in one business. In the office people work at several screens and with printed plans; outside they measure, inspect and sign off, often in someone else's plant and on someone else's land.
The four points that matter
- Site visits in other people's plant. For measurements, inspections and sign-offs the operator's rules apply, not your own. Access, on-site briefing and the required protective equipment have to be settled in advance and belong in the assessment.
- Lone working in the field. Site visits frequently happen alone. A binding arrangement is needed for who is where and at what point a missing check-in is noticed.
- Several screens and printed plans. Plans are read side by side, often on two or three monitors plus a printout. That shifts the focus to monitor arrangement, viewing distance and lighting.
- Commercial areas of manufacturing businesses. Where the planning office is part of a manufacturing business, office and plant areas have different hazards. They must not be merged into a single assessment.
What a walkthrough typically turns up
The office area rarely stands out: the workstations are well equipped and the findings usually concern monitor height and glare from window fronts. Field work is where things surface. What is regularly missing is a list of recurring site visits, an arrangement for protective equipment, and evidence that employees were briefed on the operator's rules before their first visit.
What that means for safety training
Alongside the office topics a field-work block is needed: conduct in other people's plant, handling your own protective equipment, securing your position when working alone, and the reporting route after an accident while out. Where measuring instruments, ladders or access equipment are used, operating them belongs in the training too, not in an operating instruction nobody reads.
